I saw this meme and it got me to thinking of the hypocrisies that Christianity allows and in many cases promotes.
Woah, That’s TrueLike Page

Keep Scrolling God will Punish you.
Really? Isn’t that last statement similar to the threats of an abusive husband (I know, I know…or abusive wife, significant other…)?
It’s pretty much “You do what I think is good for you to do and do it when i say or I will punish you.”
Here are a few other hypocrisies I can think of that I have seen or heard personally. Not all of these are Christian oriented and are perpetrated by people with other beliefs or non-belief. They are still something to think about.
I saw a church hold a raffle to raise money to fight the lottery. (My favorite)
Father to his son on play ground: “Do not hit other kids or I will spank you!”
Mother in grocery store to her child: “Do not lie to me or Santa won’t come see you this year.”
This post isn’t so much about the God threat as it is about the message we send when we are hypocritical. We are all human and all have our blind spots, but some things should be obvious.
An evangelical apologist the other day described the notion of an evil god as Al Capone. I found this tremendously interesting considering, as you’ve pointed out here, the Middle Eastern god, Yhwh, is in fact presented as this dastardly character: Love me, or burn.
Or, put another way:

When I still called myself a Christian I used to get particularly annoyed by emails that fellow Christians sent that had at the bottom an implied threat if you did not send them onto other people. Some would go so far as to suggest that a failure to send it to non Christian contacts was akin to denying Christ.
I responded to one person who frequently sent such emails to me that they were a Christian equivalent of a chain letter and said I refused to be manipulated in such a manner.
My view of ‘God’ at that time suggested he was above such petty manipulation.
I had taken to heart the Scripture, “our ways are not the ways of the world”, yet this tactic seemed exactly that. But now I see the whole of Christianity as just being about clever manipulation of our fears and prejudices.

God gave us free will so we could choose. It’s all part of God’s plan for you. That’s the one that always gets me.

Thanks! Things are ..OK. Many things that were making progress towards me coming out have taken steps backwards. I am still trying to sort things out and work on other plans. It has been frustrating. My energy has been directed other places than here lately.

I’m OK but situations and plans have changed some. It looks like my ability to come out will be delayed. It may be a long delay. Working on other things and trying to sort through things. Thanks for your concern.

I wish I knew what was going on, so I and others could offer relevant encouragement, but I also understand that you can’t elaborate. If there’s anything any of us could do, I’m sure we would if we could. Your good judgement got you this far, I’m sure it won’t fail you now.

There are a few things going on right now. Very little I can speak of for reasons I cannot explain. I will say my outlook on life and my point of view has not changed.

Haven’t heard from you in a while; just thought I’d check in and see how you’re doing. I understand that the Christmas season can be very busy for someone in your line of work, and I see above that your circumstances have changed and you may be delayed coming out (very cryptic! I hope you’ll elaborate in a new blog post when the time is right.). but I hope you’re doing okay, and I look forward to reading more from you in the coming year.
